WayfindingThe Flats, Cleveland, OH
Project Overview
The Flats in Cleveland, Ohio, is a historically industrial neighborhood that has transformed into a vibrant mixed-use destination, offering dining, entertainment, corporate headquarters, waterfront recreation, and residential spaces. However, the district’s unique geography—divided by the Cuyahoga River into distinct areas such as the East Bank, West Bank, Columbus Peninsula, and Scranton Peninsula—has created navigation challenges. Over time, uncoordinated signage led to inconsistency, clutter, and confusion for visitors and residents alike.
Flats Forward Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the district’s quality of life and economic vitality, partnered with Guide Studio to develop a comprehensive wayfinding strategy to address these challenges. The goal was to enhance arrival experiences, streamline navigation, and unify the district’s visual identity. The project included extensive stakeholder engagement, a wayfinding master plan, and the developing of a cohesive sign system.
A key component of the solution was a color-coded sign program inspired by the area’s industrial heritage, architecture, and bridges. This system simplifies wayfinding by clearly distinguishing each section of The Flats. Additionally, the program introduces gateway signage, directional markers, parking identification, and pedestrian-scale maps to improve overall accessibility.
By implementing a clear and cohesive wayfinding strategy, The Flats aims to strengthen its identity, enhance visitor experiences, and support ongoing development. The project reflects the neighborhood’s unique blend of grit and sophistication while ensuring that residents, workers, and visitors can seamlessly navigate and enjoy all The Flats offers.
