Wayfinding
Holland, MI

Project Overview

The City of Holland, Michigan, is a vibrant, multicultural community on the shores of Lake Michigan, celebrated for its Dutch heritage, iconic Windmill Island Gardens, and nationally recognized downtown. Despite its strong tourism economy and welcoming character, the city faced several navigational challenges—including confusing parking access, inconsistent signage, and difficulty connecting visitors from key entry points to major destinations like Hope College, the beach, and cultural attractions. With an updated city brand in place, Holland recognized the opportunity to modernize its wayfinding system to better reflect its identity and enhance the experience for residents and the city’s diverse and growing visitor base.

Guide Studio partnered with the City of Holland to reimagine its citywide signage and wayfinding system. Through stakeholder engagement, visitor journey mapping, and strategic location programming, the team identified key routes, decision points, and destination clusters. The resulting sign family was designed to reflect Holland’s unique character—merging traditional architectural cues with a fresh, forward-thinking aesthetic. Key components include vehicular and pedestrian directionals, district identification, gateway signage, electronic displays, and a parking identification system tailored to downtown’s structure and flow. The materials and forms evoke local craftsmanship, while the use of consistent nomenclature and messaging supports navigation across multiple travel modes.

Today, Holland’s wayfinding system functions as both a practical navigation tool and a cultural amplifier—welcoming people with clarity, beauty, and a renewed sense of place. It strengthens connections between neighborhoods, institutions, and attractions, while reinforcing the values of community, hospitality, and innovation that define this lakeshore city. Whether arriving for Tulip Time, exploring the downtown shops, or visiting the lakefront, people in Holland now move through the city with greater confidence and appreciation for what makes it so distinctive.
