WayfindingUniversity of West Georgia, GA
Project Overview
The University of West Georgia (UWG) spans 645 acres and serves a student body of 13,380, with 77% commuting to campus daily. Beyond its students, UWG welcomes approximately 25,000 visitors annually for university-related events and an additional 13,000 non-event visitors. However, its outdated and faded signage no longer reflected the institution’s identity or supported intuitive campus navigation.
Through a comprehensive wayfinding audit, Guide Studio identified key challenges in the university’s sign system. One of the most significant issues was a lack of hierarchy—every sign looked the same, offering little distinction between directional, regulatory, and identification signage. Visitors and new students struggled to navigate the large campus efficiently, impacting their overall experience.
To address these concerns, Guide Studio developed a modernized, cohesive wayfinding system that balances aesthetics, function, and longevity. The new sign program introduces a family of distinct but interconnected sign types, creating an intuitive hierarchy that quickly communicates what type of information each sign provides. A refined color strategy enhances visibility and brand alignment while improving durability in the region’s intense sunlight. Neutral base colors provide longevity, while red and blue accents differentiate academic and athletic buildings, reinforcing UWG’s brand identity.
Designed for flexibility and future growth, the modular sign system supports multiple modes of transportation, including vehicular, pedestrian, bicycle, and bus traffic. Thoughtful placement and clear messaging improve the experience for daily commuters, first-time visitors, and prospective students alike. By implementing this updated signage program, UWG strengthens its campus identity and enhances wayfinding, ensuring a welcoming and navigable environment for all.
