Guide Studio was initially engaged by the City of Independence, Ohio, to develop a signage and wayfinding program that would enhance navigation and reinforce the city’s sense of place. However, as the project unfolded, the city recognized that its concurrent branding initiative was not achieving the desired impact. Independence needed a clearer strategic direction—one that would authentically reflect the community’s values, aspirations, and position within the region. As a trusted partner, Guide Studio was asked to expand its role, leading the development of a comprehensive brand strategy and identity system to unify the city’s image and messaging.
Independence is known for its tight-knit, generational community, where families choose to stay and businesses thrive due to the city’s business-friendly environment and strategic location near downtown Cleveland. Residents value the city’s small-town charm, high-quality schools, parks, and local businesses, all of which contribute to a high standard of living. At the same time, there is a growing awareness of the need for progressive change, particularly in areas of diversity and inclusivity, to ensure the city remains welcoming and competitive for future generations.
Guide Studio’s branding initiative aimed to capture Independence’s strengths and aspirations, positioning the city as a place where both residents and businesses can succeed. Through strategic brand development, we established a cohesive identity system that aligns with the city’s goals and speaks to its distinct blend of tradition, community pride, and forward momentum. The brand standards and implementation plan provide a framework for consistent storytelling, placemaking, and communication, ensuring that the new identity is not only visually compelling but also a strategic tool for growth and engagement.
With a refined brand strategy and identity, the City of Independence is now equipped to communicate its story with clarity and confidence, reinforcing its reputation as a desirable place to live, work, and invest while embracing the opportunities that come with growth and change.
