City Branding
University Heights, OH

Project Overview

University Heights, a small and densely populated inner-ring suburb of Cleveland, is renowned for its diverse population and numerous educational and religious institutions. Despite being a well-established east-side community, the city lacked effective communication tools to stand out and compete with neighboring suburbs offering similar benefits.

Guide Studio, in collaboration with residents and stakeholders, undertook the task of identifying and celebrating the unique attributes of University Heights. The goal was to highlight the city’s individuality while also recognizing its connection to the larger east side “Heights” community, which shares many desirable characteristics.

As part of the City Branding and Municipal Sign Program, the resulting logo design features a “UH” set within a mosaic-like badge, inspired by a section of the University Heights map. The curvy streets and intersections cleverly form the letters “U” and “H.” The eclectic color palette, resembling a mosaic, aligns with the brand strategy and underscores the city’s messaging around being a “community mosaic” that celebrates its diverse resident population.

This City Branding and Municipal Sign Program plays a critical role in distinguishing University Heights, creating a cohesive visual identity that fosters community pride and enhances the city’s visibility among its neighboring suburbs.

“Previously, we had a logo that wasn’t forward-facing, and we were missing a message that signaled to our residents that we were advancing and putting our best foot forward. Guide was able to distill who we are into a brand that has elicited so much community pride. You now see our new logo displayed on apparel, at local businesses, and even as the new city flag!”
