Wayfinding
Downtown Kent, OH

Project Overview

Every college town aspires to be a vibrant destination. While redevelopment efforts addressed infrastructure in Downtown Kent—home to Kent State University—a strategic approach to branding and wayfinding was essential to truly set it apart.
Building on early identity studies by Kent State students, Guide Studio engaged stakeholders to uncover the community’s distinctive character. This collaboration led to a cohesive brand identity and wayfinding strategy that resonates with both residents and visitors.
At the heart of the visual brand is “Kent Speaks”, a narrative that celebrates Downtown Kent’s rich history and traditions while infusing it with an eclectic, fun-loving energy. The wayfinding program does more than guide—it enhances the experience, radiating positivity and encouraging interaction.
Wholeheartedly embraced by Kent’s Main Street Organization, the “Kent Speaks” theme has inspired new downtown events and park programming, reinforcing the area’s unique identity. Through this comprehensive branding and wayfinding initiative, Downtown Kent has solidified its status as a welcoming and dynamic destination, making exploration effortless and engaging.

We wanted to instill a sense of ‘you have arrived’ when people walked or drove around the city. To do that, we needed to strengthen the connection between our amenities. We’ve always had a welcoming atmosphere and many things to do, but now our wayfinding accentuates our best qualities.
